Ron Kenesky Moving Up?

Kenesky Ponders Move Up the Links

Mountain golfer thinking about taking a shot at national competition

Ron Kenesky has had a great summer playing golf. So much so the 37-year-old central Mountain resident and pro at Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington is contemplating spending $5,000 to go to the PGA Tour qualifying tournament in the southern U. S. this fall in a bid to get a “tour card” that would enable him to play in most of the prestigious major national tournaments.
“Maybe this is the year I try the PGA tour qualifying school,” Kenesky said. “The thought is always there. You don’t want to go through life saying, ‘What if?’ ”

In July, Kenesky won the Ontario PGA Championship at the Barrie Country Club and the $10,000 prize that goes with it.

Kenesky, who enters as many as 45 tournaments from mid-April to mid-October, said the Ontario PGA event is the biggest tournament he has ever won and he is on track to win as much as $40,000 on the minor tournament circuit this year that takes him across the country and to western New York, and includes the Great Lakes Tour and the more local Golden Horseshoe Tour.

Kenesky said he’ll decide if he wants to take a shot at getting a tour card after competing in the Canadian Assistance Championship in Victoria, B. C., in late September.

“You always want to do it when you’re playing your best and so far this has been my best year, so you never know,” he said. “I’d love to win a national championship.”

While he enjoys giving lessons, Kenesky clearly loves the competitive aspect of golf.

“I don’t know if I would be able to play the game if I was just going out and playing for fun every day,” he said. “There’s no better feeling walking up to the 18th hole of a provincial championship with a two-stroke lead … it’s just yourself versus the golf course, the only person you can blame if you don’t come through is yourself.”

A great-grandson of famous Hamilton goalie pad-maker Emil “Pop” Kenesky, Kenesky played hockey and golf as a boy and gravitated toward golf as a teenager, playing in numerous junior tournaments.

His dad, Frank Kenesky, was his first golf instructor.

“My dad was an avid golfer,” Kenesky said. “My dad said he had clubs in my hands at age three or four.”

One of two boys in the family, Kenesky said if his dad wanted to get out at night to play golf, his mother made him take along one of the boys so she would only have one child to look after.

“Myself being the oldest, I was the lucky one to go,” he said.

The family lived in Binbrook at the time, almost across the street from the Southbrook Golf and Country Club where Kenesky became a member at age 13 and learned the intricacies of the game from club pro Sandy White, now the head pro at Lowville.

“He sort of took me under his wing and helped my golf,” he said.

Kenesky said he got a job at Southbrook working in the back shop cleaning golf clubs and later moved to the pro shop.

“Sandy White said if you’re going to work in the golf shop, you might as well go out and become a golf professional so you can earn extra income teaching lessons and playing tournaments,” Kenesky recalled.

In 1997 he went through PGA play tests at the Cambridge Golf Club where he had to shoot 148 or better over 36 holes.

“I comfortably made it through,” said Kenesky, who didn’t recall his final score.

He moved to Hidden Lake in 1999 and apprenticed under club pros George Tidd and Terry Parker. He is now a Class A member of the Canadian PGA, which means he can spend more time playing tournaments in the summer as well as working in the pro shop through the spring and fall and providing winter lessons through the club at a warehouse in Burlington.

Kenesky said he’s hit three holes-in-one in the last 10 years and is due for another.

The first came in the fog at a fall tourney at Southbrook in 1997, a month after he turned pro.

Kenesky said most novice golfers tend focus too much on their swing when they should be paying attention to their stance, grip, posture and ball position.
